What is it?? GMO-genetically modified organism-scientists have been taking a gene of one species and implanting it into the DNA of another-I am not talking about hybrids-a yellow rose and a red rose can make a pink rose. I am talking about a fish and a tomato-2 completely different species that would not ever breed together naturally in nature-

Today is the March against Monsanto....
Who is Monsanto?
Monsanto is only one of the largest biotech companies that have been genetically modifying foods-and we have been eating them since 1996 without our knowledge or consent.
Monsanto has been around since 1901-began with saccharine-then began creating agricultural chemicals including 2,4D in1945. Sound familiar? This was the main component in Agent Orange that deforested Vietnam-to date, 3 generations out-there are still documented cases of birth defects and deformities-and Monsanto wants to use this as GMO in our food supply. If you interested in learning Monsanto's time line you can see it here: http://www.monsanto.com/whoweare/Pages/monsanto-history.aspx
-my review of history-If Monsanto was not creating chemicals, he was buying companies-mostly seed companies-they also enter merges with other companies-with another big focus on pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Eli Lily and company. They have also joined forces with other biotech companies such as Dow. As well as acquired Beeologics, which researches and develops biological tools to provide targeted control of pests and diseases-
Monsanto ties with the government..
The most telling evidence that Monsanto’s strategy has been
an overwhelming success is the number of former Monsanto employees who have been
given jobs in the FDA and other regulatory agencies that monitor Monsanto’s
products.
Margaret Miller is just one example. While working
as a
Monsanto researcher, she contributed to a scientific report for the FDA
on Monsanto’s
genetically engineered bovine growth hormone. Shortly before the report
was submitted,
Miller left Monsanto to work at the FDA, where her first job was to
review the same report! Assisting Miller was another former Monsanto
researcher, Susan Sechen.
Needless to say, the FDA accepted Monsanto’s findings, which
became the basis for its approval of Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine
growth hormone and its decision not to require labels on milk produced through
the use of the artificial hormone. The FDA official who made the decision not to label
Monsanto’s milk was Michael Taylor, who had worked as a lawyer for Monsanto.
Today, Michael Taylor is in the Obama Administration, in charge of food safety.
*********************************************************************************Companies like Monsanto are buying other seed companies, creating new companies, tainting our food crops and making billions of dollars-even off the poor.(who are killing themselves)AND state they do there own research on these seeds-BUT allow no 3rd party testing-OOPS we would not want to find out the truth!!! The FDA scientists who said GMO foods are not safe-FIRED.
Monsanto states they are improving agriculture and lives..Monsanto states: Sustainable agriculture is at the core of Monsanto. We are committed to developing the technologies that enable farmers to produce more crops while conserving more of the natural resources that are essential to their success. (WHEN THEY ARE COSTING THEM MORE MONEY, HEALTH PROBLEMS AND THEIR LIVES)
Monsanto patents many of the seed varieties we develop. Patents are necessary to ensure that we are paid for our products and for investments ...hmmm did you know we could patent a life form???? OH and they sue farmers whose fields have been contaminated by GMO seed!!!
********************************************************************************
A Monsanto executive told The New York Times that the safety
of genetically engineered foods was the government’s problem, not the
company’s: “Monsanto should
not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food,” said Phil Angell, Monsanto’s
director of corporate communications. “Our interest is in selling as much of it
as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.” As Angell implies, Monsanto’s interest in selling as much
genetically engineered food as possible is in direct conflict with the
government’s responsibility for food safety. Monsanto has induced politicians to abdicate their
responsibility to protect consumers through generous campaign contributions and
heavy lobbying.

"In one small village I visited, 18 farmers had committed suicide after being sucked into GM debts. In some cases, women have taken over farms from their dead husbands - only to kill themselves as well.
Latta Ramesh, 38, drank insecticide after her crops failed - two years after her husband disappeared when the GM debts became too much. She left her ten-year-old son, Rashan, in the care of relatives. 'He cries when he thinks of his mother,' said the dead woman's aunt, sitting listlessly in shade near the fields.
Village after village, families told how they had fallen into debt after being persuaded to buy GM seeds instead of traditional cotton seeds. The price difference is staggering: £10 for 100 grams of GM seed, compared with less than £10 for 1,000 times more traditional seeds. But GM salesmen and government officials had promised farmers that these were 'magic seeds' - with better crops that would be free from parasites and insects. Indeed, in a bid to promote the uptake of GM seeds, traditional varieties were banned from many government seed banks. The authorities had a vested interest in promoting this new biotechnology. Desperate to escape the grinding poverty of the post-independence years, the Indian government had agreed to allow new bio-tech giants, such as the U.S. market-leader Monsanto, to sell their new seed creations."

Livestock and poultry are raised on animal feed, much of which is composed of the leftovers from processing crops, including GM crops.

Are GMOs Safe?
The biotech industry and the FDA both claim that GMOs are
the same as their conventional food counterparts – they are “substantially
equivalent” and thus safe for us to
eat. However, genetic engineering is unpredictable – it can have unintended
consequences:
Gene gun insertion
of DNA is imprecise and random
Overproduction of
naturally occurring toxins
Adverse changes in
nutritional composition
Creation of new
allergens
Known allergens
produced in unexpected places
Yet despite these known risks, the federal government does
not mandate human consumption clinical trials or long-term testing on animals
or tests for carcinogenicity and allergenicity or independent third-party
studies, leaving the burden of “proof of safety” in the hands of those who have
the most to gain by the commercial sale of GMOs.
*********************************************************************************
Despite the lack of federally mandated studies, there is
scientific, medical, and anecdotal evidence amassing about the risks to human
health from consuming GMOs. A few examples: Bt toxin – a bacterial insecticide
produced in some GMO corn – has been found in the bloodstream of 93% of
pregnant women and 80% of their fetuses. In the 1990s, a GMO soybean
genetically modified to contain a Brazil nut gene was found to cause allergic
reactions in humans allergic to Brazil nuts. There are peer-reviewed GMO
feeding studies that show toxic or allergenic responses in lab rats. And
perhaps most damning is that there are internal memos from FDA scientists
citing the risks of GMO safety and toxicity that were disregarded by their
superiors.
Environmental Risks
The big three risks to the environment from growing GMO
crops are:
The unintentional
yet inevitable cross-contamination of organic and conventional crops with GMO
crops, which has already occurred
Superbugs
resistant to pest-resistant GMO crops have evolved and are destroying those
crops
Superweeds
resistant to herbicides sprayed on GMO crops have evolved and caused farmers to
spray more herbicide per acre than ever before as well as resort to the use of
even more-toxic herbicides

So what am I gonna do about it???
-Me personally I am opening a natural foods shop in Oneida, NY offering non-gmo and organic foods..see more at peakesharmony.com. I also research and provide information for all of you, make a conscious decision to be more aware of what I am buying-look for the non GMO label.
******************************************************************************
What can you do??
1. Sign a petition to mandate labeling of GMO foods-I have one for NYS-contact me to sign 315-264-5554 or email beth@peakesharmony.com
2. Buy foods with the NON-GMO label visit http://www.nongmoproject.org/ for more info, there is even an app for your smart phone!
3. Tell your family and friends about GMO's.
4. Reach out to your local legislation and ask them to support the mandatory labeling of GMO's for New York state visit this website..http://gmofreeny.net/
5. Continue to educate yourself on GMO's.
6. Buy organic-USDA organic seal states they can not use GMO ingredients.
7. Grow your own food-find non-gmo seeds http://www.organicseedfinder.org/
http://www.seedsnow.com/
